5 things to do before traveling with a peanut allergy
Follow these tips that I use for almost all of my trips
Traveling with an allergy, especially with a peanut allergy, can be downright challenging and almost impossible for some. However, don’t be don’t be discouraged there are certain precautions you can take before you go on your adventure.
I had the opportunity to study and visit China a few years ago. I was not familiar with Chinese food and the way food was prepared so I decided to do some research before my departure.
- The first thing I did before my trip was I visited some local Chinese food restaurants (non-American style). I was able to discuss my allergy with the servers and the cooking staff. They were extremely helpful and recommended that I have a card that states my allergy and its restrictions.
- On the advice of the staff, I made a card stating my allergy (written in Simplified Chinese) using Google translate. I then printed and laminated the card and had a friend read the card to ensure it made sense. Also here is a great site where you can pre-order professional cards for other allergy concerns.
- I was traveling with a large suitcase, so before my trip I loaded up my suitcase with some fruit bars, instant noodles, and protein bars. I even went as far as put half of these snacks in my carry on luggage just in case!
- Pack lots of non-drowsy antihistamines and EpiPens. Be sure to make sure you have enough to last you the entire duration of you trip as your favourite brand might be hard to come across on your travels, plus in my experience I find the prices tend to be allot higher than home!
- Inform all of your friends/travel companions of your allergy and limitations and do as much planning ahead of time as possible. I have found this blog, and think it’s a useful resource!
There are many more things that you can do before your trip. If you do something that helps you, please send me a note!
Bon voyage!
